Rooster (Niwatori)

Meaning: Courage

In ancient Japanese mythology, the rooster was said to have tempted the sun goddess, Amaterasu, out of her cavern bringing light back to the sky after a period of darkness. (see Amaterasu)

In recognition of the rooster’s bravery during this time of despair this bird is symbolic of courage throughout Japan. Due to their relation with the goddess, roosters are regarded as sacred and permitted to roam freely around Shinto temples and shrines.
