Susanoo, The God of Storms, was banished from the heavens after his wild behavior caused his sister Amaterasu the Sun Goddess to go into seclusion thus hiding the sun from the world. After being banished, Susanoo aided the elderly couple who took him in, by killing Yamata no Orochi, the eight headed dragon, that had been terrorizing the countryside and eating the elderly couple’s daughters.

As they prepared for Orochi’s coming, Susanoo turned their last remaining daughter into a comb which he wore in his hair. They set several tubs of sake outside for the dragon to drink. Once the dragon was drunk, he slayed the dragon with his famous sword Totsuka no Tsurugi. From the tail of the dragon he retrieved the marvelous sword Kusanagi, which he later gave to Amaterasu as penance for his behavior. He then married the daughter of the elderly couple and they had many children which would become other deities.
